What is aeration and should I have it done on my lawn?
Aeration involves putting small holes in the soil of your lawn to allow air, water and nutrients to get to the grass roots more easily. This allows the roots to grow deeper and produce a stronger lawn. Not all lawns require aerating, however, and you should only consider it if:
What are chinch bugs and should I be concerned about them?
Chinch bugs are common in North America and prefer to attack turfgrass species, such as fine fescues, perennial ryegrasses, Kentucky bluegrass, bentgrass and zoysiagrass. The bugs may cause irregular patches of turf to turn yellow and eventually straw-coloured. They can cause serious damage to your lawn, but we can easily determine if preventative steps need to be taken. The easiest way to control the bugs, if you’ve detected the problem early, is to regularly water your lawn as the nymphs cannot withstand large water drops, and the adults require hot and dry conditions to thrive.
What are fairy rings?
Fairy rings are circular areas of grass that are darker in colour than the surrounding grass, and are caused by the growth of a certain species of fungi. Although the damage is rarely serious, fairy rings can be unsightly, especially on well-managed lawns. Controlling or fixing the problem can be difficult and labour-intensive, so if you suspect your lawn might be suffering from fairy rings, give us a call and we’ll come and check it out.
